Being & Building Followers & Friends of Jesus

Would like recommendations for info on Spiritual Disciplines.

Though I've been in religious community since birth, I've not been intentionally, methodically discipled. In the last few years I've grown in my conscious need and appreciation for this training. I've read Gary Thomas, who encourages study of the "classics", and most of Dallas Willard's books and media.

Check out the works of DALLAS WILLARD. He is big in the spiritual formation world. has a website and his group even put out the Spiritual Formation Bible. Lots of info on spiritual disciplines used in classic Christianity. I have really enjoyed reading this version of the Bible.

Hi Don!
I was first introduced to spiritual disciplines by "Celebration of Discipline" by Richard Foster. It continues to be a reference guide for me.
I have also enjoyed two books edited by Foster: "Spiritual Classics" and "Devotional Classics." Both give a sampling of some of the writings of the early fathers and monastics. As such, they are a great starting point for further reading. "Devotional Classics" is more generalized, while "Spiritual Classics" is focused on the spiritual disciplines.
I hope this helps!

Hey Don! If you are not already familiar with him John Ortberg is huge on spiritual formation. He has numerous books but I would start with "The Life You've Always Wanted" or "The Me I Want to Be." The second book is connected with a new online spiritual formation tool you can check out at www.monvee.com Hope this helps! God bless!
