What is Discipleship?
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus is quite clear as to our mission:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Our mission is to be disciples who make disciples.  It sounds pretty simple on the surface and yet we have made it extremely difficult.  Why is that?

It is because we have made discipleship into something Jesus never intended it to be.  For many Christians, discipleship is seen as that which takes place after someone trusts Christ whereas evangelism is that which occurs before they trust Christ.  Or they see discipleship as that which takes place inside the church building through a series of classes whereas evangelism is what we do outside the church building as we share the Gospel with the lost.

Both perspectives have no biblical basis.  Jesus never intended evangelism and discipleship to be seen as two different things.  Biblically, discipleship is both a pre-conversion experience as well as a post-conversion experience.  As we have spiritual conversations with people who are lost, we are discipling them into a greater understanding of who Jesus is and why they need a Savior.  After they trust Christ, we continue discipling them into a greater understanding of the Scriptures and how to walk with Christ daily.

So what is discipleship?  It is the process of moving people from unbelief to belief about what is true of God and the Gospel in every area of life.

This is exactly what Jesus did with the disciples.  He moved them from unbelief to belief over a period of time as He taught them the truth about God, about Himself, about salvation, about the Holy Spirit, about Scripture.   This is what we do as well as we talk to people who are lost about Jesus and mentor believers in their walk with Christ.

And, by the way, it doesn't take place in a classroom.  It takes place as we walk with people through daily life...just like Jesus did.

  • How does instruction/education become "movement"?
  • Agree/Disagree - - Getting out of the classroom does not eliminate the classroom but it does require as as-you-go/where-you-live curriculum.
