Playing the prophet

It is common nowadays to hear Christians say that the church and individual Christians should "speak prophetically" to the world. By this they mean to speak what God would have them to speak, and not necessarily to predict the future. Thus it is common to hear Christians claim that they are "speaking prophetically" when they say something which they believe God would have them to say, such as publicly calling a sin and a sin despite the world regarding it as no sin. Sad to say, it is also…See More

A Prayer for the Assistance, the Light, and the Knowledge of God

Note: This article is related to the article "A Rare Prayer for the Church", which is posted here: http://discipleshipnetwork.ning.com/forum/topics/a-rare-prayer-for-the-church-2. It is not necessary to read one of these articles to understand the other.       Psalm 80 begins with this plea: Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims,…See More

A Rare Prayer for the Church

Psalm 80:14 says: Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;      In the book The Treasury of David, by Charles H. Spurgeon, the following prayer attributed to the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498) is quoted in connection with this verse: Still it has roots, still some branches are living. In the beginning of the world it began, and never has failed, and never will. For thou hast said, Lo, I am with you always, even unto…See More

An Israelite of the 8th Century B.C. Reacts to the Prophet Hosea

An Israelite of the 8th Century B.C. reacts to the prophet Hosea: You know what I can't stand about Hosea? It's not just that he criticizes us--although that's bad enough. It's that he doesn't criticize the nations around us. It should be the other way around. Those nations are more wicked than we are. His so-called "prophetic ministry" should be focused on them, not on us. He seems obsessed with what he calls our "adulterous" idolatry, and yet he says nothing against them. If our idolatry…See More

Jeremiah Johnson, false prophecy, and the state of the church in America

Jeremiah Johnson, a self-described "prophet" associated with a Pentecostal/charismatic movement called "New Apostolic Reformation", predicted Trump would win in 2020.     After the election he apologized for this mistake.     He has been hated more for apologizing than for his false prophecy.     Think about that.     If one would like to learn more about how Johnson has been hated--even to the point of being threatened with death--I suggest one read this report Religion Unplugged…See More
